My name is Julie Sheridan and I am married to my husband Dave and we have a gorgeous 5 year old son called Jack.
Due to family history I have been having mammograms since 2007. For the first few years everything was fine but in July 2012 I had to have a lumpectomy, which was followed by a 3 week course of Radiotherapy. Luckily I managed to carry on working throughout but it did leave me feeling pretty tired. A few months passed by and all was well. We had decided to book a camping holiday with some friends and their 2 boys which my son was very excited about!
Then at the beginning of July 2013, following on from a routine mammogram and further biopsies I was told I had breast cancer and would require surgery. The good news was it had not gone into my lymph nodes. We got back from our camping holiday at the end of August and my operation was booked for the beginning of September.
Before my operation was scheduled I had read about a scheme with the company I work for where you can apply to work for a charity of your choice for 6 months. My Dad and I have been going to the Tree of Lights service at Beechwood for a number of years now and I thought how much I would like to apply to work there.
It was whilst I was discussing my placement that Lorraine suggested I may benefit from attending one of their 8 weeks programmes. I wasn’t sure at the time if it would be for me but I thought I would give it a go. I found the programme really beneficial especially the 1-1 time and also the complementary therapies. I find Beechwood really inspiring and the staff and volunteers are all really friendly.
