Beechwood Family Support Service
Offers confidential support and counselling to all family members where somebody has been diagnosed with cancer, or other life limiting illnesses. Although there is a particular focus on the needs of children and young people, family members of all ages (including grandparents) are welcome to access this service.
When sombody in the family is diagnosed with a serious illness, all sorts of things begin to happen;
Parents and Carers may find it most helpful to look at how the diagnosis and treatment of cancer or other life limiting illnesses affects the different family members, and how they might best respond, particularly where the children are concerned.
Children themselves often find it helpful to talk in confidence to somebody outside the family and to explore what is going on for them, without upsetting those closest to them. They may have a number of questions about what is happening, which people are hesitating to answer. Because the adults in their family are upset and worried, they may be reluctant to talk with them about their own worries.
Grandparents and close family friends may find themselves taking on a large support role within the family. The opportunity of talking through their own concerns and worries offers greater support not only to them, but also to the whole family.
Teachers and College Lecturers who are aware that a student has to contend with the serious illness or death of a close family member, may contact the family therapist, who would be pleased to look with them at issues around school/college support.'Twilight sessions' or workshops can be facilitated, for staff training and support, if requested.
Medical Personnel who would find it helpful to explore issues around cancer or life limiting illnesses, family dynamics and support may request a group session.
All those affected by cancer or life limiting illness diagnosis are welcome to seek support at any stage, but we would encourage you to contact Beechwood as soon as possible. Issues tackled early on may well prevent problems developing later.
Breavement Support on both an individual and a group basis is offered through the Family Support Service. You may find it helpful to contact the service early in order to be able to look positively at ways family members could support one anoter, particlularly where children are concerned.
Family support takes place at Beechwood, in warm and friendly surroundings with paint, puppets, games, books and other resources available to encourage both children and adults to express themselves in the way that is most comfortable for them. However, home visits may be made, and telephone support given if requested. Support via e-mail is also available, and may be particularly helpful to young people.
